This is not an option on this camera.
However, I have found it to be a quick procedure to open my pictures in Paint Shop Pro for example and change it to Grey Scale. I had good results too. Sometimes , I have had to add more light, but nothing to hard to do.
Nikon must have thought that Black and white are something of the past :-(

you do not have the setting to take b&w,
you’ll have toget a new camera to do this or a new nikon body atleast

I don’t think you can….Ken Rockwell has a very good review, deeply detailed, of the D70…
I suggest using Picasa, Webshots, or Photoshop. If you have the Nikon software…obviously that, too.

Unless your camera has a B&W or Sepia setting, you can’t. In fact you answered your own question, you manipulate them afterwards!

It must be done via software, DO NOT DO BASIC DESAURATION OR CONVERING TO GREYSCALE!
This will give you a rubbish low contrast image.
You really need to tweak the individual levels of each colour channel before desaturating to get best results.
For example, for landscapes you might want to empasise the green and blue colour channel over the red, for protraits the red channel becomes the most important.
If this sounds complex then you aren’t going to be very satisfied using digital cameras for B&W

There’s no way to make a digital photo look like black and white film — they’re totally different media.
If you want the look of b&w film you’ll have to buy b&w film.
